Anyone out there know how to network Windows PCs connected to the HeaNET router to ones on Edubuntu?

Hi Simon,

to network a linux machine to a windows machine (through a router) you need to install SAMBA.

To make a long story short : Samba is a set of tools to share files and printers with computers running Windows. It implements the SMB network protocol, which is the heart of Windows networking.

You need Samba to :

* act as a server for Windows (or Samba) clients: share folders and printers, including PDF pseudo-printers so all the computers in your network may write PDF files,
* act as a domain controller in a Windows network (authenticating users, etc.)
* do some more complex stuff, such as using a Windows domain controller to authenticate the users of a Linux/UN*X machine...

I basically want to allow by edubuntu computers to use the printer which is attached to the Windows PC. I was told that Edubuntu systems should seemlessly recognise Windows computers on a peer-to-peer network (workgroup called MSHOME) but neither Windows or Edubuntu computers can see each other on network places.

NO,

edbuntu is a Linux based operating system so it can't "see" windows machines without something like Samba installed as it uses an entirely different system.

Don't worry though, there's loads of step by step guides on how to add a linux (ubuntu / edubuntu) machine to a windows network.

Once set up, you will be able to share files and use a printer from another machine no problem.

Try 'googling' something like "Installing samba on ubuntu tutorial".

You might find the following link useful: link to tutorial
