On completion of this course, you will be able to create effective and engaging presentations for Interactive Whiteboards. From the outset, you will be introduced to Interactive Whiteboards and their ability to facilitate social learning. You will be shown a variety of free open source software to enable you to create engaging educational content. Using Impress software, a free open source software, you will be shown how to create, edit, open and manipulate presentations for use in cross-curricular teaching. Part of the course will involve the development of a short lesson to be delivered via an Interactive Whiteboard. You will also be advised where to source interactive lessons.

Course Modules

Module 1:

  • Learn about Interactive Whiteboards
  • Introduction to Social Learning
  • Learn about the different types of Interactive Whiteboards and how they work
  • Learn where to source Irish educational content for Interactive Whiteboards

Module 2:

  • Learn about Open Source and Free Software suitable for Interactive Whiteboards
  • Learn how to install and use a free mind mapping software
  • Learn how to install and use a free drawing software to enhance lessons
  • Learn how to use Impress, a free open source presentation software, to create lessons

Module 3:

  • Introduction to Browser Apps and how to use them in education
  • Introduction to more online educational content
  • Learn about free online Games and Activities for use on an Interactive Whiteboard

Module 4:

  • Using Audio, Video and Multimedia on the Interactive Whiteboard
  • Sharing Live Audio content and Video content via an Interactive Whiteboard

Module 5:

  • Teaching Numeracy using an interactive whiteboard
  • An interactive lesson in Literacy
  • Teaching Science using an interactive whiteboard
  • Using an interactive whiteboard to teach Music
  • Activities for senior classes

After each module, you will be required to contribute to discussion forums in response to questions posed by the course facilitator. Each question will require critical thinking on the topic posited. The moderated forum is designed to generate a community discussion and will in turn develop a community of practice. During the course, you will need to answer multiple-choice questions to assess your formative knowledge of the subject.

To complete the course, you must undertake a significant assignment based on all modules. This exercise will take the form of a reflective exercise, creation of a lesson plan and a presentation which can be used in the following academic year. The assignment will provide you with an opportunity to analyse:
