  • Target Audience: Any teacher who enjoys history or wants to learn about new resources available to complement the teaching of the subject. Anyone interested in schools’ roles in commemorating the War of Independence, Civil War, partition of the state etc.
  • Equipment Required: All our courses are accessible through PC, Laptop, iPad, Tablet and Mobile devices. Internet access required with broadband speeds recommended

COURSE LAYOUT

Module 1 – Early Ireland (Stone and Bronze Age)

  • What is history and why it is important?
  • Learn how the first people came to be in Ireland.
  • Understand the progression that led to the Bronze Age and the improvement in living conditions for the people.
  • Look at ways history can be integrated with other subjects and taught actively inside and outside the classroom
  • Look at the importance of oral history, linking in with primary language curriculum.
  • Learn about the school self-evaluation guidelines and how they can bring about positive change in the teaching

 

Module 2 – Celtic and Christian Ireland

  • Understanding the Celts.
  • Who was St. Patrick and what changes did he bring?
  • Differentiation in history.
  • Learn ways to teach history using ICT in line with the Digital Strategy for Schools.
  • See how history teaching can be improved collectively as a whole school priority.

 

Module 3 – The Vikings and the Normans

  • Understanding who the Vikings and the Normans were and the changes they brought to Ireland
  • Looking at the progression of Irish life between the 10th and 15th century
  • Learn how other schools are using ICT to create incredible history lessons.
  • Understand the benefit of teaching the children to think like historians and engage in active learning
  • Learn how schools from different communities have celebrated anniversaries of important events in an inclusive manner

 

Module 4 – Ireland: 1400- the Famine

  • Be enabled to understand what life was like between 1400-1851
  • Appreciate some of life’s modern conveniences brought about by the Industrial Revolution
  • Learn about different trips, tours and activities that can be undertaken outside the classroom
  • Learn about a number of digital resources which can bring history lessons to life
  • Understand how a collaborative history plan could improve teaching and learning
  • Consider the benefit of choosing history/SESE as the school’s SSE target

 

Module 5 – Modern Ireland

  • Be enabled to understand how life developed after the famine
  • Learn about independent Ireland and how it has changed between 1922 and the present day
  • Look at the iterative process of SSE and learn how it can benefit schools
  • Explore the Looking At Our School framework for schools and how we can integrate its findings into teaching and learning
  • Learn how to sensitively commemorate the anniversaries at this time
