This course aims to assist teachers working in the area of Special Educational needs. It will explore the characteristics of inclusive  schools and introduce the new School Inclusion Model  and outline its role. Teachers new to the role will understand the role of the Special  Education Teacher (SET) model of  allocation and explore the journey towards the new  model of support in SEN as outlined by the  NCSE.

Module 1

  • Provide a definition of Special  Education Needs (SEN) in an  Irish context.
  • Explore the characteristics of  inclusive schools

  • Understand the role of the  Special Education Teacher  (SET) model of allocation

Module 2

  •  Understand the role of  assessment as an SET.
  • Explore a wide variety of assessment tools useful for  both SETs and class  teachers (CTs) as  promoted by government  agencies such as NCCA,  NEPS and the DE.
  • Examine the importance of  using assessment data to  support teaching and  learning of pupils with  SEN.
  • Outline the role of  precision teaching as a  form of assessment and the  benefits associated with  this assessment tool.

Module 3

  • Appreciate the importance of  working with parents and their  role in supporting children with  SEN
  • Examine and appreciate the  role of the class teacher when  supporting children with SEN
  • Examine the role of the SNA and appreciate the importance  of working with the SNA when  supporting children with SEN
  • Examine the role of the SENO ∙ Appreciate the role of outside  agencies e.g. NEPs, CAMHS,  HSE etc.
  • Understand how to work with  such outside agencies

Module 4

  • Support pupils with SEN in  relation to literacy in the  following areas: vocabulary,  spelling, fluency,  comprehension, sight  vocabulary, phonics and  phonological awareness
  • Understand the role of  assessment when supporting  pupils struggling with literacy  with a specific focus on supporting reading and writing  skills
  • Evaluate the role of station  teaching when supporting  children with literacy  difficulties
  • Become familiar with ideas for  station teaching in both the Junior and Senior classes that will support pupils with literacy  difficulties

  • Identify and critically evaluate  supports, strategies and  interventions for learners with  numeracy difficulties
  • Appreciate the importance of  assessment when supporting children with numeracy  difficulties
  • Understand the role of assistive  technology when supporting  children with DCD/dyspraxia
  • Appreciate the role of ICT  when supporting children with  numeracy difficulties
  • Identify and critically evaluate  supports, strategies and  interventions for learners with  behavioural difficulties
