The aims of this course are:

  • to enable teachers to understand the pivotal role that mathematics has in preparing pupils for life
  • to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge, skills and resources in order to implement the primary maths curriculum and maximise mathematics learning and outcomes in their classes and schools
  • to provide teachers with everyday, current examples of mathematics teaching methodologies, learning activities and resources that can be used in the classroom to support and enhance mathematics teaching, assessment and differentiation
  • to provide teachers with material and content that complements the curriculum and is evidence-based and relevant to their everyday mathematics practices
  • to equip teachers with the necessary knowledge to monitor the quality of mathematics learning at a broader whole-school level and to support school improvements and reforms

  • Understand the importance of creating positive mathematic cultures in schools
  • Understand various mathematics initiatives and interventions in primary schools
  • Identify ways to create home-school links to help parents support their child’s mathematics learning and development
  • Explain the school self-evaluation process and apply it to the context of mathematics

 

Module 3 – Problem-solving in the Primary School Classroom

  • Appreciate the importance of problem-solving in mathematics education
  • Understand the problem-solving process
  • Appreciate different types of problems, supports and resources
  • Understand how to promote problem-solving in the classroom
  • Understand how to support the development of problem-solving skills and strategies

 

Module 4 – Number in the Junior Classes

  • Recognise learning objectives in the following strand units: counting and numeration, analysis of number, comparing and ordering, addition and subtraction, and place value
  • Understand the trajectory of learning within each of the above strand units
  • Identify ways in which to develop learning for each of the strand units
  • Appreciate the importance of the concrete-pictorial-abstract model in developing learning activities for each of the strand units
  • Consider how to apply the above learning to support teaching and learning in a primary school setting
