This course aims to provide teachers with an in-depth knowledge of Therapeutic Play for Children with ASD & ADHD. Learn to use practical tools and strategies for teaching pupils with ASD, through use of information about ASD in general, including theories of ASD, presentation of pupils with ASD, learning styles, managing challenging behaviour, and practical advice regarding the implementation of interventions specific to pupils with ASD. 

Contemporary research in the field of promoting inclusion of pupils with additional needs in mainstream classrooms, both nationally and internationally, will be presented to teachers, including research from the DE, NEPS, Middletown Centre for Autism, the National Council for Special Education (NCSE), the ESRI and the OECD. A module on ADHD will aim to equip teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote successful inclusion and maximized participation of pupils with ADHD in their classrooms.

Course Layout

Module 1

  • This module enables teachers to explore how children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others as part of learning in STEM. 
  • Developing pupils exploring, planning, making and evaluating skills over the course of the school year.
  • Pupils will demonstrate ‘very high levels of interest and participation in learning’.

Module 2

  • Describe the six-step School Self-Evaluation Process (DE School Self-Evaluation Guidelines, 2016) and implement the SSE process in their own schools, as per Circular 0016/2018.
  • The role of STEM Education is to help children and young people to be adaptable and open to new possibilities. In this module teachers will revise and detail the pedagogical approaches that underpin how Therapeutic Play provides a safe psychological distance for children from their problems and allows expression of thoughts and feelings appropriate to their development.

Module 3

  • Utilise domains, standards and statements of (highly) effective practice in planning and monitoring the SSE process, in accordance with the LAOS Quality Framework (DE, 2016).
  • Teachers develop an understanding of how structured, therapeutic play in the classroom through Lego is a fun, enjoyable activity that elevates children’s spirits and brightens their outlook on life and how open-ended play expands self-expression, self-knowledge, self-actualisation and self-efficacy in an active and collaborative way.
  • Pupils will have the necessary knowledge and skills to understand themselves and their relationships demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding required by the primary curriculum achieve the stated learning objectives for the term and year

Module 4

  • Teachers will gain an understanding of the healthy development of a child to be the primary goal of the highly structured, systematic and predictable nature of brick building play which makes it appealing to children with social communication difficulties
  • Teachers will deploy structured activities which enable the necessity for joint attention, shared goals, social communication and mutual purpose.
  • Skill development; play and inquiry-based learning; thematic learning; coding and computational thinking; collaborative learning; or STEM design projects.

Module 5

  • Teachers will explore how Therapeutic Play can have a positive effect on children with learning disabilities and how they can often grow in confidence when given the opportunity to lead play sessions
  • Learning in the STEM area is about enabling pupils to be inquisitive, to explore possibilities, to design and make, and to develop their problem-solving and creative thinking skills in an active and collaborative way.
